To close out the weekend, Cal Poly Men’s Tennis faced the University of Utah at a neutral site in Los Angeles, ultimately losing 4-1 on Saturday, Feb. 15.
Having lost 5-2 to LMU entering the match, the Mustangs (2-5) tried to find their first road victory of the season, but the Utes (6-1) shut them down.
Cal Poly was 1-2 against Utah entering Saturday’s matchup, with their only win coming at home in March 2019.
Cal Poly made a strong bid for the doubles point to open the afternoon action, as junior Aaron Eliscu and sophomore Sean Ferguson took a 6-3 victory at No. 3.
However, both other matches went into a tiebreak and fell Utah’s way to put the Mustangs behind early.
When Cal Poly won the doubles point against Gonzaga and Sacramento State, they carried the momentum into an overall match win. But all five of their 2025 losses have started with a 0-1 deficit from doubles, and the team has yet to turn their luck around in singles.
Against Utah, Wian Roothman was the only singles victor, taking the win at line No. 6, 6-4, 7-5, for his first career singles victory at Cal Poly.
Freshman John Cross and sophomore Sean Kamyshev were also both up in their matches when Utah clinched the match. The Utes took lines No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 in straight sets on their way to their 6th win of the season.
Cal Poly will have to wait for their next try at a road win, as they come home on Friday, Feb. 21, to face BYU at 6 p.m. They will stay at Ronca Tennis Center until Sunday, Feb. 23, to host Idaho in a 10 a.m. morning showdown.
Cal Poly has not lost against either team in four total matchups, winning three straight against BYU and coming out with a 4-2 victory in the team’s only match against Idaho.
