Looking to carry their momentum into week four of Big West play, the Cal Poly women’s basketball team traveled north to take on UC Davis, ultimately falling in a 63-51 loss at the University Credit Union Center.
Despite an strong effort from redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie, who finished the game with 16 points, eight rebounds and a steal, the Mustangs couldn’t outlast the Aggies as they fell 63-51.
Cal Poly kept the game close in the first half, with Lichtie knocking down four threes and the Mustangs trailing by just one point going into the second half.
The Mustangs slowed down in the second half, scoring 19 points across the final two quarters. With no slowdown from the Aggies, UC Davis pulled away to secure a lead that reached 14 at its largest.
The Mustangs struggled from the field all game long, shooting just 28% from the field and making only five field goals in the entire second half.
Although the issue was with shooting in the second half, the Mustangs took care of the ball, not giving the Aggies easy opportunities off of mistakes. Cal Poly finished with a season-low 11 turnovers, forcing UC Davis into 17.
For the Aggies, it was two of the most prolific scorers in the Big West, Tova Sabel and Megan Norris, who led the way.
Sabel finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Norris led all scorers with 17 points while adding seven rebounds and two blocks.
Cal Poly will head home for a weekend matinee matchup against UC Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 18, which will tip-off at 2 p.m.
