Cal Poly Women’s Basketball’s scheduled road game against Big West rival UC Irvine on Thursday, Feb. 1 has been canceled as a result of illness among the team.

The illness in question is not clarified, but games were canceled during the 2021-22 season due to a breakout of COVID-19 among the team.

The canceled game will go down as a forfeit and a loss against the Mustangs, according to GoPoly.com and per Big West bylaw 4.3.3: Any scheduled conference contest not honored by a member institution’s sports team shall be counted as a forfeit for the cancellation institution.

This outcome is less than ideal for the Mustangs, especially after coming off of a 63-59 home loss against Hawai’i this past Saturday, where their fourth-quarter comeback fell short, snapping their three-game winning streak.

Thursday’s game would’ve been a great test for the Green and Gold as the Anteaters were tied for first in the conference at 7-2, but with the forfeit, they took sole possession of first place.

The Mustangs now drop to fifth in the competitive Big West conference with a conference record of 6-4 and an overall record of 10-10.

As of the writing of this article, Saturday’s road game against UC Davis is planned to go on as scheduled at 2 p.m.
