California’s minimum wage will increase to $10 an hour by 2016.

Earlier this month, Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation to raise it to $9 an hour by July 2014 and complete the increase by January 2016.

California will be the first state to increase their minimum wage to the 10-dollar mark, well above the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

The increase came after President Barack Obama called on Congress to increase the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour during his February State of the Union address.

This is the first time since 2008 that minimum-wage workers in California will get a pay increase.
