Cal Poly’s MERGE Dance Club is preparing to take the stage at Illuminate, bringing together students from a wide range of majors and dance backgrounds for the club’s annual performance.

Merge provides an inclusive space for students who want to continue dancing in college without the time commitment or audition process of competitive teams. Members include lifelong studio dancers, former competitive performers and students returning to dance after years away. Others joined simply to explore a new creative outlet while balancing rigorous academic schedules.

This year’s Illuminate showcase features two contrasting pieces designed to highlight the club’s versatility. One performance embraces dynamic musical shifts and dramatic expression, while the other focuses on structured choreography and sharp movement. Together, the pieces aim to demonstrate both the artistic range and collaborative spirit of the club.

Rehearsals have brought members together across disciplines, blending engineering, theater and science majors into a unified ensemble. As dancers work through formations and transitions, they rely on peer support and shared feedback to refine their performances.

Illuminate serves as one of the few opportunities for many students to perform on a stage after high school. For participants, the event represents more than a performance, it is a chance to reconnect with dance, build friendships and channel creativity into a shared goal.
