Cal Poly Track and Field sent 49 Mustangs to the Bay Area over the past weekend to compete in the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Classic. Over the two-day meet at Stanford, the Mustangs set seven top-10 marks in program history, highlighted by the women’s 4×400-meter relay and redshirt senior Travis Martin’s stellar performance.
Sophomore Avery Adelman and juniors Elianah DeMange, Kalia Estes and Jordan Jackson posted the third fastest time in school history in the women’s 4×400. With a time of 3:41:40, the quartet captured fifth at the meet, only .27 seconds behind Hawai’i in fourth.
Martin had a memorable day in Stanford, taking home first place in the men’s hammer throw with a staggering mark of 73.82 meters. The throw not only improved his own No. 2 mark in program history, but ranks No. 1 in the West Region, No. 2 in Division I and No. 28 in the World this outdoor season.
On the women’s side, sophomore Gracelyn Brown also recorded a personal best with a throw of 51.79 meters. The mark led her to second place in the collegiate section of the event and was the sixth-best in program history.
In women’s pole vault, senior Lexi Evans added another victory to her collegiate career, recording a height of 4.26 meters. The mark ranks No. 9 in the West Region and No. 14 in Division I this outdoor season.
Senior Desie Armstrong was a part of multiple top-10 marks in school history over the weekend.
In the women’s 100-meter, Armstrong moved to the No. 9 spot in program history with a lifetime best of 11.77 seconds in the prelims, eventually taking second in the finals. She also ran the lead-off leg in the women’s 4×100 relay along with redshirt senior Cadence Roy-Williams and sophomores Madison Easter and Ava Simos. Cal Poly captured third-place in the event, finishing with a time of 45.55 seconds, good enough for the fifth-best time in school history.
Graduate student Aidan McCarthy, recently named the Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week during his outdoor debut a week ago, recorded fourth in the men’s 1,500-meter invite with a time of 3:39.94, only 3.45 seconds slower than his personal best. The three-time First Team All-American’s time ranks No.3 in the West Region and No. 9 in Division I.
To round out the top-10 marks at the meet, redshirt senior Isabel Sanchez ran a personal best time of 10:36.04 in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, improving her fifth-best mark in school history. In men’s javelin, junior Lucas Scott recorded fifth in the invite section with a throw of 64.89 meters. Not only was it a lifetime best for Scott, but it also improved his No. 8 mark in school history and ranks No. 20 in the West Region.
The Mustangs return to action on April 16-18, where they will compete in another pair of track meets, the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays.
