Wind and Surf advisories were issued for San Luis Obispo County by the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard (NWS) today.

The wind advisory is in effect for San Luis Obispo County beaches, San Luis Obispo Inland Central Coast, San Luis Obispo County mountains and San Lucia mountains.

According to the NWS, “Northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.”

The advisory will remain in place from 6 p.m. tonight to 9 a.m. Oct. 28th. The NWS says that winds at these speeds may cause tree limbs to be blown down as well as power outages.

The NWS recommends securing loose outdoor objects as well as driving with caution.

“Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution,” the NWS stated in the advisory.

Along with the wind advisory, the NWS also issued a surf warning for San Luis Obispo County beaches at 3:55 this morning. The high surf advisory is projected to be in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Breaking waves from 8 to 14 feet are to be expected. According to the NWS, waves of up to 16 feet along with dangerous rip currents may appear along North West facing coasts.

“There is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea,” the NWS stated in the advisory. “Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.”

These advisories follow a string of odd weather disturbances in San Luis Obispo earlier this month. Flood and tornado advisories were issued to San Luis Obispo county after heavy rains and a severe thunderstorm.

In addition, with temperatures reaching a high of 87 Degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, it is important to exercise caution in and around the shore. The NWS recommends remaining out of the water, sticking close to lifeguard stations, and staying off the rocks as being near jetties can be treacherous in these weather conditions.
