Paul Flores, the man convicted of killing Cal Poly student Kristin Smart, was stabbed in prison on Wednesday afternoon for the second time.

At 3:27 p.m. on Wednesday, staff at Pleasant Valley State Prison (PSVP) noticed an inmate stab Paul Flores in the recreation yard. Officers stopped the incident through verbal demands, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) wrote in a statement to Mustang News.

The CDCR confirmed that PVSP is investigating the attack as an attempted homicide.

Two inmate-manufactured weapons were found on the scene, according to the CDCR.

Flores was transported to an outside facility immediately for high medical care. The CDCR said he has since returned and is in fair condition.

No other inmates or staff were injured. The person who attacked Flores is currently in restricted housing.

According to the CDCR, The Office of the Inspector General has been notified and the PSVP’s Investigative Services Unit is investigating the incident.

Flores’s attorney, Harold Mesick, has yet to respond to Mustang News for comment.

In August 2023, Flores was injured in prison and suffered an injury on the neck. He was taken to an outside medical facility and returned the next day.

Flores was convicted of the murder of Kristin Smart in October 2022. He was reportedly the last person seen with Smart before her disappearance on Cal Poly’s campus in 1996. He was sentenced to 25 years to life for first-degree murder.

His father, Ruben Flores, accused of helping hide Smart’s body, was found not guilty.
