A Sierra Madre resident reported to the Cal Poly Police Department that a person had attempted to climb over a restroom stall door in Tower 5 while the student was occupying it at 8 a.m. on Saturday, according to an email from university spokesperson Keegan Koberl.
Police instructed the non-student, female visitor who climbed the stall to leave campus.
CPPD since resolved the incident, classifying the report as “suspicious circumstances/vehicle/person” and describing it as “Peeping Tom.”
They entered a second report in response to the circumstance, which was entered as “Ordered to Leave Campus Advisement”.
While there was no contact or threats reported, the behavior is classified as “voyeurism”— a misdemeanor crime that involves peering into an occupied building without consent and is punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
This violation allows officers to ban non-students from campus for up to a week, and anyone who returns in violation of this is committing a misdemeanor trespass.
The peeping Tom takes place amid heightened concerns over on-campus safety at Poly Canyon Village.
In September 2024, former Resident Assistant Alexis Alejandro was sentenced to seven years and four months in state prison after pleading no contest to attempted rape with intent to assault at a PCV apartment.
After the break-in, the university increased patrols and hired four full-time housing-security experts, measures implemented to make residents feel safe and secure on campus.
University Housing has reminded all residents to lock their doors, report suspicious activity by using the Rave Guardian app, and call Campus Police Dispatch at (805) 756- 2281 immediately if there are any problems.
