ASI is bringing American rapper A Boogie Wit da Hoodie to perform a free concert for students on Wednesday, May 14.
The concert will take place in the Cal Poly Recreation Center Main Gym (Bldg. 43), which can accommodate up to 3,500 students, according to Katie Pierce, ASI Events student manager and mathematics junior. Doors will be open from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m., with a student opener performing at 7:20 p.m. and the headliner taking the stage at 8:30 p.m.
A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, whose real name is Artist Dubose, emerged from the Bronx and gained recognition in 2016 with his mixtape “Artist.”
The artist is best known for his platinum-certified hits “Drowning,” featuring Kodak Black. His album “The Bigger Artist” reached the top five on the Billboard 200, and his double platinum follow-up, “Hoodie SZN,” spent three weeks at No. 1.
Required registration opens May 8 at noon in the ASI Access Portal. Students can attend for free with their PolyCards and government-issued IDs.
Mechanical engineering junior Malia Stone is very excited that A Boogie Wit da Hoodie is coming to Cal Poly.
“I really like how his sound blends rap and R&B, which can be enjoyed by a wider crowd,” Stone said. “It’s not often that a big-name rap artist comes to SLO, so I can’t wait to see his performance.”
Sociology junior Tonayia Rush thinks that a Boogie Wit da Hoodie concert would be exciting to see.
“My familiarity with his music goes back to early high school, so I would love to experience it live and revisit songs I haven’t listened to in a long time.” Rush said.
Sociology junior Iris Spear is not very familiar with his music, but knows a lot of people at Cal Poly who really like it, and who have said they’re super excited about his performance.
“My friends from other colleges said they’re jealous,” Spear said.
ASI has previously hosted soft-rock band Dayglow and comedian Chris Redd.
