It’s dead week, and I’m still holding a grievance about registration week.
It’s probably because I went around bragging about only having two more classes left at Cal Poly, only to go to my adviser and find out I had all these elective credits to fill. How could I be so careless when calculating my units? I completely ignored the little fact that, even if I completed my upper-division electives, I still need a substantial amount of lower-division ones.
This is about when I started asking everyone what their favorite classes were so I could find some fun options to enjoy using as elective credits. And with two priorities left, I thought I was set. Well, I was wrong. I took a priority, didn’t get the one GE I wanted to take, and am waitlisted in several other classes. Why? Because I only have a limited amount of classes left at Cal Poly, and I’m finally trying to take some classes by choice as opposed to necessity.

I really have enjoyed a lot of the required courses, but I have to take electives now. This is where I get frustrated. I am not allowed to take electives in journalism, even though the broadcast and public relations core coursework is vastly different than editorial’s.

I understand the reason behind taking electives, and I agree they are necessary. But it appears as though all the things I’m interested in are now available to majors only or don’t count.

I want to get out of taking only journalism classes, but like everyone else has probably noticed, it appears as though classes are just disappearing at Cal Poly. Only two sections offered here, one class at 7 p.m. there and a majority of the other classes (my two preferred areas to use my electives are graphic communication and art and design) are only open to majors, period.

On top of that, there are several Mustang Daily-oriented obligations that bar me from taking some other awesome classes (i.e. the Alfred Hitchcock film class).

That being said, I am curious to see if the looming tuition increases improve this obvious lack of classes. For the sake of Cal Poly students’ class schedules, I really hope it does.

Now that dead week is upon us, I’m sorry for the blast from the past about registration. I hope others fared better than I did, especially if they used a priority. Thankfully, I only have two quarters left, but after seeing registration go down the way it did this quarter, I’m glad I will only have to deal with that one more time.
