A $1.1 million roof replacement project began on Dec. 2 at the Mathematics and Science building (BLDG. 38), after the roof was deemed to have “met its lifespan,” according to university communications. The project is expected to be completed by Dec. 13.

To accommodate the construction, 12 parking spots in the H-10 lot were temporarily closed on Nov. 27, and are projected to reopen on Dec. 13. No additional closures were reported, according to University Spokesperson Matt Lazier.

The roof replacement is part of ongoing roofing maintenance funded by Cal Poly and Cal State University deferred maintenance funds, Lazier said in an email to Mustang News.

The project comes ahead of California’s winter storm season, which has repeatedly caused significant rain and flood damage in San Luis Obispo. In March 2023, the university had 137 ongoing work orders for leaks affecting 11 buildings across campus.

“Building occupants and visitors will observe construction activity and related noise on the roof and the surrounding area,” Facilities Management & Development wrote in a campus-wide email on Nov. 27.

The university advises individuals to follow posted signage and exercise caution when near active work sites.
