San Luis Obispo County residents opposed Proposition 33 in Tuesday’s election, with 66% of voters opposing the measure.

Proposition 33, proposes expanded rent control, allowing cities to cap prices for tenants.

Cal Poly students voiced concerns over affordability in both rent and insurance rates.

Cal Poly junior Naeryl Ronquillo, a first-time voter, felt strongly about Proposition 33’s rent control provisions.

“As a college student who pays rent, I really don’t think we should be paying this much,” said Ronquillo, noting that many students struggle with high rental costs on top of tuition and other expenses.

Ronquillo registered to vote in San Luis Obispo County this year.

Rafael Bobadilla, a local State Farm sales associate, explained that the proposition would allow companies to give discounts to new customers who had continuous coverage with another insurer.

Insurance companies would not be able to offer long-term customers any benefits if the proposition allows new customers to get discounts.

For students like Ronquillo, rent and insurance costs will remain key issues as SLO County looks to the future without Proposition 33.
