Andrew, you wrote a letter claiming that “The Bible, God’s word, is not some trend like Vans slip-ons; it is immutable.” If that is unfailingly true, I hope you intend to follow all of the rules. I believe there are quite a few (more than just 10 commandments), and you may find some of them […]

Guest column misunderstood college based fee issues
In response to “CLA Students shouldn’t have to foot the bill” by Lauren Stupek: Based on the number of things that have seemingly gone “unaddressed,” it seems that you just aren’t paying attention to the situation. Yes, Baker makes a lot of money but the $328,000 (plus housing and other benefits) he earned last year […]
Result of voting no will be less access to classes you need
Crappy priority registrations. Ever been through one of them? You e-mail the professor to explain your situation and you beg and plead that you need this class in order to move on to the next series within your expected graduation schedule. And this is just seven weeks before the next quarter starts. Still, there you […]
Don’t expect taxpayer support if you can’t keep campus clean
On Sunday, March 1, I rode my bicycle up through the Cal Poly campus. I was discouraged, if not affronted, when I observed trash strewn about the campus, particularly on the lower-north side of the architecture building (the art center area). Cal Poly students, faculty and administration: if you wish to ease operating costs and […]
There’s more to gender discrimination in sports than dunks
Although Alisha Axsom’s points regarding the popularity of women’s sports are persuasive and well executed, she leaves out an important caveat from her testosterone theory. Men’s sports, mainly baseball, football and basketball, draw their popularity from history. One hundred years ago, when men’s sports achieved national notariety, women’s sports (and human rights for the matter) […]
Libertarian column was simplistic and offensive
In response to Jeremy Hicks’ column “Stimulus lures with promise of instant gratification”: I found this column offensive, as well as replete with fallacious arguments and devoid of any logical arguments. As an appeal to emotions, however, it is outstanding. To refer to people, usually women and children, who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances and […]
Why I can't be a Republican
The fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives is why I can’t be a Republican. At the base of liberalism are the views that we should focus on taking care of one another and our planet (.i.e. national health care and sustainable practices), while the conservative base is focused on taking care of “yourself” (low taxes), “your own” (bigotry), and “your wallet” (big business)while ignoring the need and opportunity to enrich other people’s lives and give them the chance to at least live the decent life that we take for granted.

Sarah Palin will rock D.C.
As a 77-year-old re-energized foot soldier I can only say that Sarah Palin is a breath of fresh air to the country. She has electrified the United States and the electorate and her nomination as vice president has done more than if we had built ten new power plants.
Open Letter from the Social Sciences Department
Dear Campus Community, The undersigned faculty of the Social Sciences Department would like to express their outrage at the despicable acts of intolerance, discrimination, and racism at the Crop House. We stand together as a coalition against acts of hate that have occurred far too often on this campus.
Other letters to the editor: compost project removal, Prop 8 and more
Compost removal only takes us backwards in sustainability It is sad news the day that we as a campus move backwards in the sustainability movement. The amount of food that could potentially be composted every day on campus is huge. It angers me that a decision that big could be made without any student involvement.
Political columns are unconvincing
I could spend all day writing why Ian Nachreiner’s column makes
absolutely no sense, but I think I would be preaching to the choir and the unconvertable. I just want to know if there are any “independents” out there who actually read these columns and have their opinions on the issues swayed? Everyone I know either doesn’t read them, or they read the conservative one just to laugh at it.
