Mustangs resume Big West play

At the start of the week, Larry Lee, head coach of the Cal Poly baseball team, wasn’t willing to hit the panic button.

Even though his Mustangs had fallen to 1-5 in Big West Conference play, he said Monday it wasn’t too late to turn things around. He may have been right.

Pac-10 signees to play in prep game

A handful of high school boys basketball stars headed to the Pac-10 Conference, one bound for Cal Poly and several others also on their way to Division I programs, will display their talents at Mott Gym on Sunday.

“This is a great opportunity to get a lot of this year’s standouts together for our local community that enjoys watching basketball, and to acknowledge them for their abilities as well as their commitments to respective programs,” game director Jon Sun said.

Mustangs hang onto lead

The Cal Poly baseball team won its second-straight Tuesday night, hanging on to an initially wide lead to defeat non-conference opponent Fresno State at Baggett Stadium, 8-5. In a game that saw 14 different pitchers, four stolen bases and 18 strikeouts between the two teams, Cal Poly was able to build an early lead in the first inning.

Poly erupts in seventh for win in Malibu

After losing several late leads while dropping 10 of 12 games, the Cal Poly baseball team turned the tables Tuesday afternoon.

The Mustangs, who trailed Pepperdine 5-3 heading into the seventh inning at Eddy D. Field Stadium, reeled off six consecutive runs to regain the lead on their way to a 10-5, non-conference win in Malibu and snapping a four-game losing skid.

Commentary: Vogue cover offensive to some

LeBron James = King Kong?

I saw the cover of the “shape” issue of Vogue magazine, which features model Gisele Bündchen and LeBron James as examples for the story “Secrets of the Best Bodies.”

Initially confused after seeing the cover, I had to read an article by Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock to grasp how one could consider the cover racist.

Women's golf takes another tournament

Trailing by two strokes after Monday, the Cal Poly women’s golf team shot a tournament-best 295 Tuesday to edge runner-up and host Cal State Northridge by seven in the nine-team Matador Spring Invitational at the Tierra Rejada Golf Course in Moorpark.

The Mustangs finished with a 36-hole, 607 total on the 6,018-yard, par-72 layout to capture their 10th tournament championship in the eight-year history of the program, and their second this season.
