Matt Hanson truly a laker at heart

Matt Hanson stepped to the line Thursday night knowing full well he hadn’t made a free throw in a game for more than three weeks. There were only 1.4 seconds left, and if he could make one this time, his team would probably win.

As 1,676 people nervously looked on, Hanson went in his mind to his favorite fishing spot, Clubhouse Lake in his home state of Minnesota.

Rocket taking a huge risk

Rising temperatures and post-midterm laziness have made sitting through class especially difficult this week. On the way to class this morning, students are likely debating how important the upcoming lecture really is. Some might have taken the gamble and checked out for the beach.

Top football signing chose Cal Poly over Pac-10, SEC

Rich Ellerson didn’t want to single anyone out. The Cal Poly head football coach hesitated, shifted his weight and tried to pick his words carefully. But in the end, he couldn’t resist voicing the obvious: Quentin Greenlaw stands out.

“As heavily recruited as Quentin was, that meant a lot to us,” said Ellerson, asked if any one or two of the 16 signings the program announced Wednesday were particularly sought after.

Is this the year of LeBron?

With this weekend’s all-star game marking the halfway point of the NBA regular season, I wanted to reflect on how crazy it has been. For the first time since the ’80s, we have seen the Boston Celtics and the L.A. Lakers rise to dominance at the same time.

Titans hold off Mustangs

The Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team’s coaching staff hung back, calm and collected, talking amongst themselves while their players were left alone to relax on the bench in the face of pressure. About 50 feet away, Cal Poly head coach Kevin Bromley time and again urgently invested himself into impassioned instruction at the center of a close-knit huddle trying to learn on the fly.

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team will play its first Big West Conference dual matches of the season this weekend, visiting UC Irvine at 11 a.m. Saturday and Cal State Fullerton at 10 a.m. Sunday. “It’s going to be really competitive against those two teams,” Mustangs head coach Hugh Bream said.

Cal Poly wins nail-biter

Heading into Thursday night’s game against UC Irvine, the Cal Poly men’s basketball team knew it would have to make up for the absence of formerly starting senior guard Dawin Whiten. It just didn’t know quite how it would until game time.

Cal Poly momentarily found some answers while snatching a 57-56 victory from the Anteaters at Mott Gym in a Big West Conference win that saw eight Mustangs play at least 18 minutes, and reserve freshman guard Shawn Lewis score a season-high 12 points.
