A woman escaped unharmed after two local fathers helped her out of her burning BMW on Johnson Avenue, moments before flames destroyed the vehicle Tuesday evening.
Christie Anderson said she was driving her BMW on Johnson Avenue when two men, who were on their way to take their children to baseball practice, noticed the vehicle was on fire.
According to Anderson, one of the men drove around her vehicle, cut in front of her and came to a complete stop in the roadway, forcing her to stop as well. The man then exited his vehicle and informed Anderson that her car was on fire.
“I didn’t know the car was on fire,” Anderson said while watching firefighters extinguish the blaze.
A second man, who had been driving behind Anderson, pulled to the side of the road and helped Anderson out of the vehicle and away from the flames as smoke and fire spread through the car.
Police arrived at the scene within minutes, followed shortly by firefighters, who quickly began working to contain the fire. Emergency crews temporarily blocked part of Johnson Avenue while firefighters doused the vehicle.
The BMW was declared a total loss. Anderson said her phone and purse were left inside the vehicle during the evacuation and are likely destroyed, along with the purse’s contents.
“It’s been a really good car, and we’ve had no issues with it,” Anderson said.
Anderson remained uninjured during the incident and waited near the scene as firefighters continued spraying the burned vehicle. She said her husband was on his way to pick her up.
The cause of the fire is not immediately known.
