At Cal Poly, St. Fratty’s Day has long been associated with large, off-campus gatherings that spread through neighborhoods and drew concern for safety and crowd control.

Morning on the Green is beginning to change that.

Introduced in 2025, the university-run event brings thousands of students to a centralized campus location for a large-scale concert. Now in its second year, the event is becoming a defining part of how students experience St. Fratty’s Day.

Instead of scattered house parties, students gather behind barricades and in front of a stage, creating a more organized and controlled environment. Attendance has grown significantly, with crowds reaching into the tens of thousands.

Students say the event provides a safer alternative while maintaining the energy and social aspects of the day. Many described it as an upgrade, offering music, structure and a shared space to celebrate with friends.

At the same time, some students note that the event does not fully replace the broader sense of community that once extended beyond campus. The shift has raised questions about the role of the university and the city in shaping the tradition moving forward.

Even with mixed perspectives, students consistently pointed to Morning on the Green as the center of the celebration.

As the event continues to grow, it is not just replacing past traditions — it is becoming one.
