Dolly Parton, country music icon and frequent guest of the Madonna Inn, died on Tuesday, according to an announcement by her nephew on Instagram. She was 80 years old.
Parton was a frequent visitor to the San Luis Obispo area during the years she lived in Solvang on Alisal Road. Parton lived at the property from 2004 to 2014, using it as a hidden getaway from the bustle of Hollywood life, according to SFGATE. Parton never acknowledged the property in public. It was built in 1920 and is on the market for almost $2 million as of June 2026, according to Noozhawk.
Since her death, several San Luis Obispo businesses have paid tribute to her philanthropy and warm personality.
In honor of her death, Woods Humane Society waived adoption fees for all dogs and cats for the day on Wednesday, Aug. 26 in both San Luis Obispo and Atascadero locations.
“As a passionate animal advocate, Dolly reminded us, ‘Animals bring joy, comfort and unconditional love, they deserve to be treated like family,’” the organization said in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
During Parton’s years in Solvang, she frequently visited the iconic Madonna Inn, where she was close friends with founders of Madonna Inn, Alex and Phyllis Madonna, according to an Instagram post from the hotel on Tuesday.
“Dolly was the kindest soul, an incredible talent, and a beautiful light who brought joy and love wherever she went. Her legacy will live on in so many hearts, including ours,” the hotel posted.
