On Wednesday night, Cal Poly Women’s Soccer (5-5-4, 2-2-2 Big West) drew 1-1 with CSU Northridge, placing the Mustangs in third place in the Big West standings.
CSUN took an early lead in the first six minutes with a penalty goal after a Cal Poly handball in the box.
Cal Poly responded with a goal of their own in the 25th minute. Junior Ruby Casey scored the Mustangs’ lone goal of the night, with an assist from newly promoted captain Miah Thomas.
This was Casey’s second goal of the season. It came off a corner kick to Thomas, who set Casey up to head it into the back of the net.
Offensively, the Mustangs matched the Matadors in shots taken. Seven were on goal compared to CSUN’s two. Shannon Porubski held CSUN to one goal, with Porubski recording one save in the match.
The Mustang starting lineup was without captain and midfielder Sophia Minnite for the fourth straight game. Minnite suffered an ACL injury in the match against Long Beach on Sept. 26 and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Thomas was promoted to captain to fill Minnite’s absence on the pitch. Her assist in Wednesday’s game was her first of the season.
The Mustangs are now six games through their 11-game conference schedule. They trail by three points in a three-way tie for second place in the Big West and by six points to first place.
Cal Poly closes its road stint on Saturday with a 7 p.m. game against Cal State Bakersfield.
