Van Ostrand to represent Canada at Olympics

Former Cal Poly first baseman and outfielder Jimmy Van Ostrand is headed to the Olympics.

On Tuesday the British Columbia native was bound for Beijing with Team Canada, having just completed a series of four exhibition games against Team USA.

Local kitchen studio has grand opening

The Garden’s Kitchen Cooking Studio in San Luis Obispo will open its doors to the public in a grand opening doubling as a charity fundraiser Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Ashleigh Hutchison, the kitchen’s owner and operator, said she came up with the concept of the studio after having lived in, and been exposed to, the food culture of San Francisco and Hawaii.

The melodic interpretations of local artist and singer-songwriter Shane Stoneman could be heard while passing by the Sweet Springs Saloon in Los Osos Friday night.

Poly investigates beach contamination

The water at the Pismo Beach pier has been on a danger list for some time, most recently making an appearance on the non-profit organization Heal the Bay’s top 10 list of most polluted beaches in California. Although Pismo is a popular surfing spot, the water is often tainted with deadly bacteria, forcing the beach’s closure to swimming.
