The Robert E. Kennedy Library will be witnessing some changes to the second floor Learning Commons in the near future.

The decision to completely phase out the home economics department met resentment from the faculty and students.

The chaos caused students to protest and march to President Warren Baker’s office several times in the spring of 1992.

One of the students who protested, Marshawn Porter, a home economics graduate, said the situation was disheartening.

Cal Poly’s now defunct home economics department once offered a bachelor of science in the major where students could concentrate in interior design or textiles and clothing merchandising.

In the spring of 1992, the School of Professional Studies closed, moving multiple departments to different colleges.
