Big Brother squeezing out small business

The year isn’t 1984, but Big Brother is indeed watching.

Smiling sweetly, he hands out stimulus checks aimed at getting consumers to spend more, saying it is their American duty to kick-start the economy by continually buying more junk from China.

On the other hand, he slyly tries to pass euphemistically-named legislation like the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 – a bill he claims aims to ensure “the safety of the Nation’s food, drug, medical device and cosmetic supply in an increasingly globalized marketplace.

Weis wanted to head to San Diego

Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis reportedly wanted to watch San Diego State take on Cal Poly this weekend in order to scout the Aztecs, who’ll visit South Bend on Sept. 6. He reportedly told Irish Illustrated he asked to go to the game, but no one from his athletic department was allowed.

Cal Poly outdoes 16 FBS teams in Sagarin ratings

Cal Poly was ranked 121st in the Jeff Sagarin NCAA football preseason ratings released Friday. Poly grad brings home gold

BEIJING – Cal Poly graduate Stephanie Brown Trafton won the gold medal in the women’s discus Monday night at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing and became the first gold medalist from Cal Poly after posting a mark of 212 feet, 5 inches.

“Someone told me that I was coming to the Bird’s Nest to lay a golden egg,” she told reporters.

Bill to lower textbook costs

Students can expect cheaper textbooks by next school year, thanks to a Congressional bill signed into law by the president on Aug. 14 encouraging textbook publishers to help lower book prices. The bill, part of the Higher Education Opportunity Act, goes into effect in July 2010.
