Several Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) preseason rankings have placed Cal Poly in the top 15, but arguably the most important top-25 did the same Thursday, when the Mustangs found themselves slotted No. 14 in the FCS coaches poll.

Cal Poly received 275 points.

Naturally, three-time defending national champion Appalachian State earned top honors, unanimously.

Ranked teams on Cal Poly’s schedule are Montana (No. 7), McNeese State (No. 10) and South Dakota State (No. 20).

In the “others receiving votes” category were Great West Conference foes North Dakota (with five votes) and UC Davis (three).

Altogether, here’s where Cal Poly was ranked in (speculatively) noteworthy top-25s:

USA Today Sports Weekly – 6th

The Sporting News -10th

Phil Steele’s Magazine – 10th

Sports Media Entertainment Network – 12th

Any Given Saturday fan poll – 13th

Coaches’ – 14th

The Sports Network – 14th
