The Mustangs’ track and field team will compete in one final tune up before the Big West Championships next week when they head south for a dual with Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Cal Poly looks to be a heavy favorite in the running events, which dominates the early portion of the dual.

Mock Trial club offers a chance for intercollegiate competition
Cal Poly’s Mock Trial club gives students the opportunity to practice real life civil and criminal cases, and participate in state wide competitions. The club consists of all students, while professors and attorneys serve in an advisory role. The university also offers courses to help students practice and prepare for competition.

Weekend roundup: Cal Poly softball sweeps UC Davis
The softball team swept UC Davis and in Sunday’s series-ending game, six players collected an RBI for the Mustangs who are 25 games above .500 for the first time in program history. The baseball team took two of three at UC Santa Barbara this weekend.

Cal Poly Hall of Famer Kaufman passes away
Cal Poly linebacker’s coach and two-time Super Bowl champion Mel Kaufman died Saturday night in his home in Santa Margarita. He was 50.
No cause of death has been announced but an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
Kaufman was a linebacker for the Cal Poly Division II national championship team of 1980, but he had his greatest success with the Washington Redskins where he won Super Bowl’s XVII in 1982 and XXII in 1987.

VIDEO: Students hold vigil for Gaza victims
About 15 students and community members attended a candlelight vigil for victims of the Gaza conflict at the Mission Plaza on Thursday night.
The event, organized by Students for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, billed itself as non-political.
Attendants said they came to mourn both Israeli and Palestinian victims of the conflict.

Cal Poly’s Barden to play in Senior Bowl tomorrow
Cal Poly senior wide receiver Ramses Barden will make one final collegiate appearance on Saturday as he prepares to take his game to Sundays in the fall.
Barden will play in the Under Armour Senior Bowl at 4 p.m. tomorrow in Mobile, Ala. in a game that will be televised nationally on the NFL Network.

Will it still be change we can believe in four years from now?
On Tuesday, history was made as our nation swore Barack Obama into office. I am proud of this moment in history. I am glad our country has moved forward to a point where he has been elected and is serving as our president. However, we must remember he’s just a man, and caution ourselves about tying a social movement to the policies of one man.

Finding autism’s culprit
In a recent report in Environmental Health News, UC Davis researchers have concluded that California’s sevenfold increase in autism cannot be explained by changes in doctors’ diagnoses and most likely is due to environmental exposures. The scientists who authored the new study advocate a nationwide shift in autism research to focus on potential factors in the environment that babies and fetuses are exposed to, including pesticides, viruses and chemicals in household products.
