Poly celebrates Latino history

November is Latino History Month and this year’s celebration is bigger than ever.

“This year is really cool because we have a director and have planned more events,” said Gabriela Garcia, a nutrition senior and Multicultural Center employee.

There are usually two weeks in October dedicated to Latino history, but the center wanted to have a whole month to bring awareness about Latino heritage and culture.

Cal Poly grad has youthful harmony

It’s late on a Tuesday night and the halls are vacant at Judkin’s Middle School in Pismo Beach. A light shines from the band room and sound emanates out into the darkness.

“Be our guest. Be our guest…we are here to do a show for you… You bring up your arms like this and you point your right finger at the audience,” Jan Zilli, member and choreographer tells the group.

Proposition 1D hits home for Poly

If students are not getting politically involved, Proposition 1D on the Nov. 7 ballot might change their mind. The proposition will give $16.7 million over two years to Cal Poly for the design of a new science center, replacement of the Anderson Pool, equipment and furniture for the Construction Management building and other minor upgrades and renovations around campus.

Democratic club president takes on government

While the presidential election of 2004 may have turned some people away from politics, it sparked interest for Zach Austin. The political event led Austin to become politically conscious.

Austin found himself a liberal and a democrat dedicated to changing the current political structure, his reasons including the current administration’s catering to corporations, their unwillingness to check on Bush and disregard for America’s core values.

Fast food gets healthier at Frank's

Saturday morning at Frank’s Famous Hotdogs off is a favorite for families to enjoy pancakes together, while college students sober up to a breakfast burrito, but the restaurant has added a new item to the menu that will make the experience all the better.

Frank’s has been using rice-bran oil instead of soy-bean oil for a little over a month, making its food much healthier than other fast food competitors.

Poly receives high rankings

U.S. News and World Report has named Cal Poly one of the best public-master’s universities in the west for the 14th consecutive year. Overall, Cal Poly took seventh place in the Best in West category.

The only other two California colleges that ranked higher than Cal Poly on the list were Loyola Marymount University at fifth place and Santa Clara University at second.
