The Cal Poly women’s basketball team has just played one game, but it may have already received the worst news of the season.

Reigning Big West Player of the Year Kristina Santiago came off the court just two minutes into the Mustangs’ first game of the season due to what she is telling me is a knee injury. She never checked back into the game, which the Mustangs won 74-57, and she didn’t tally any points.

If the injury is severe, the loss would be huge for a team which is looking to build off its best season in program history last year. Santiago averaged a conference-high of 19.6 points per game and also averaged 8.5 rebounds per game, helping her team to a second-place finish in the Big West.

Now in her senior season, she is on crutches, watching her team from the sidelines.

Santiago told me that she will undergo an MRI Tuesday and she will know the complete severity of the injury once that is done.

Check the Mustang Daily later this week for a full story.
