Cal Poly Baseball defended home field once again in game one of their double header against Seton Hall winning 20-12 on Saturday, March 1 at Baggett Stadium.
The Mustangs (4-5) scored a run in six out of their eight innings on offense, including two four-run innings and one six-run inning.
The Pirates (3-6) could not keep up with the offensive output but still scored their second-highest run total of the season.
Offense continues hot stretch
The Mustangs got out in front early, with the first four batters reaching base before junior Jack Collins laced a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam.
From there the offense never slowed down, scoring a run in each of the first five innings.
Every Mustang starter ended the day with a hit, with new leadoff hitter freshman Dante Vachini being one of five hitters with three hits.
Sophomore Braxton Thomas shook off a slow start to his season with a three-hit, three RBI day.
The team’s 21 hits are a season high, and their batting average was .500 throughout the game.
After a slow stretch to start the season against UCLA and No.1 Texas A&M, Cal Poly has scored more runs in the first two games of the series (38) than they had in the previous seven games (20).
Bueno’s hot start to the season
Sophomore lefty Josh Volmerding performed admirably, giving up six runs on five hits, four walks and four strikeouts across five innings. That paired with the offensive explosion was good enough to earn the win.
First out of the pen was sophomore right hander Reece Bueno in the sixth. Bueno went the longest he has all season going three innings and giving up just one hit.
Bueno is quickly cementing himself as a top option behind closer junior Tanner Sagouspe. In his four appearances he has given up just one earned run across eight and one-third innings of work.
Sophomore left hander Chris Downs came into some traffic in the ninth but was able to limit the damage and secure a win for the Mustangs.
