Cal Poly Football suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 30-20 to San Jose State on the road.
The Mustangs (2-1) entered the matchup undefeated, while the Spartans (2-1) came in with one loss to USC.
The Mustangs held their ground during the game. Quarterback Anthony Grigsby Jr. finished with 249 passing yards, 11 more than SJSU QB Luke Weaver. Cal Poly struck first with a touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter, but left room for SJSU to take back the lead with a missed extra point from Josue Lopez.
Both teams struggled in the kicking game. San Jose State missed two field goal attempts, helping Cal Poly enter the fourth quarter tied at 20.
The Spartans broke the tie with a field goal before intercepting Grigsby in the end zone on Cal Poly’s ensuing possession. San Jose State followed the turnover with a touchdown to put the game out of reach.
SJSU is the only FBS team Cal Poly will face this season, and a tight score with near-equal possession times for each team shows the type of team Cal Poly has this year, one to watch out for.
“We fought, we fought, we fought,” Head Coach Tim Skipper said after the game.
The Mustangs will face the University of San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 19, back in San Luis Obispo with a 5 p.m. kickoff.
