Cal Poly Football fell to the Weber State Wildcats 34-42 at home in double overtime on Saturday, October 3.
The Mustangs (3-3, 2-1 Big Sky) started the game at home coming off an away win at Eastern Washington last week. Meanwhile, the Wildcats (3-3, 2-1 Big Sky) came in off a loss, looking to beat Cal Poly for the first time since 2024.
Linebacker Mikey D’Amato, who leads the team in total tackles with 60, was injured in last week’s game and was seen on the sidelines not in uniform and with a boot on his left leg. He is expected to be out for a few weeks, but Head Coach Tim Skipper said he thought the team adjusted well to not having D’Amato on the field.
In this sold-out game during Cal Poly family weekend, the crowd was hyping up the team during every play. Running back Jaden Green, who put up the second-most rushing yards in a single game in Cal Poly history at last week’s win, said the crowd gave the team momentum. While his near record-breaking performance last week was notable, Green also contributed significantly in the loss, rushing for 170 yards and accounting for two of the four touchdowns, including the first overtime touchdown.
The game stayed close throughout, with Cal Poly going into halftime down 17-9 after a field goal and touchdown with a missed extra point. The Mustangs responded immediately in the third quarter with an interception play that allowed Green to score a touchdown and gave junior quarterback Lucas Razore a chance to get on the field to make a two-point conversion to even out the score, which he successfully passed to tight end Luke Leighton.
The fourth quarter ended in a 27-point tie, sending the game to overtime. Cal Poly was looking to turn over a new leaf by winning in overtime, since the program has lost its last eight overtime games. The Mustangs started off strong by scoring a touchdown to start the first overtime period, but Weber State responded by leveling the score at 34, forcing double overtime. Weber State started with the ball in the double overtime period and scored a touchdown and the mandatory two-point conversion that comes with the double overtime period. The Wildcats held off the Mustangs and sacked quarterback Anthony Grigsby Jr. to win the game 42-34 in San Luis Obispo.
The Mustangs are headed on the road for the next two weeks, first against Idaho State on the 10th and then against Northern Colorado on the 17th. Cal Poly Football returns home on Saturday, October 24, to face Utah Tech, a brand new addition to the Big Sky Conference.
