Cal Poly architecture student Luis Javier Martin was arrested yesterday on accounts of possession of stolen property and resisting arrest, according to a San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) report.

SLOPD dispatched two officers at 3 a.m. on Sunday to the neighborhood between Kentucky and Fredericks streets after a phone call from a citizen reporting two men were looking into parked cars, according to the report. Upon locating them, officers approached the suspects. Both dropped the items they were holding and fled from the officers.

The possessions the two dropped were identified as stolen property from parked cars in the area, according to the report.

SLOPD Lieutenant Keith Storton said they managed to take about five items before they were apprehended, but none of these items have been named because of their close nature to the investigation.

“Part of the investigation is trying to link not only to the victims but to the property,” Storton said.

Officers caught Martin after a short chase, but the other male was not apprehended. Investigations as to his identity are underway. Martin was taken to San Luis Obispo County Jail and booked there.

Storton said the investigations into the identity of the other suspect will include reviewing Martin’s connections.

“We’ll be looking into it as far as people he might be associating with,” Storton said.

Storton said the two were probably checking parked cars in the area to see if any were unlocked, rather than actually breaking into them.

Journalism senior Bryce Jacobsen’s car is parked in the lot where the alleged theft took place, but he said he is still “not too worried” about safety.

“It’s definitely a little sketchy, but all things considered (San Luis Obispo) is a safe town,” Jacobsen said. “If someone rummaging through my beat up ’99 Explorer is my biggest safety concern, I think I’m doing alright.”

  1. I really don’t think it was necessary to post this up on Mustang Daily. I understand if it was posted in the SLO newspaper but it’s kinda fucked up to be posting it for the whole school to see. The kid messed up, I’m sure he gets it and will face the consequences but no need to humiliate him in front of the whole school, his peers, and professors. But then again, it’s probably posted ’cause he’s Mexican. Seems like they’re making a big deal out of it.

  2. I agree with this last comment. This is a horrible way to make a statement, I cant believe how a higher learning institution would do this to one of their own students, SHAME on YOU!

  3. Way to put this guy on full blast for the entire school/community/internet to see. Everyone has done something stupid that they regret at one point in their lives, and I’m sure the authors of this article have done some stupid things too. I wouldn’t doubt for a second either that his mugshot and his full name was published because the fact that he’s a minority in this city. It really isn’t that lowkey that minorities in SLO aren’t really welcomed fully by the entire community and that the community isn’t as nice as everyone claims it to be. But besides all that, I still can’t believe the SCHOOL newspaper would publish all of this info about it’s own student. Classless.

  4. I’ve had items stolen from my car while parked in San Luis Obispo. This thief broke the law, he should be publicly shamed.

  5. He’s an adult and should and will suffer all consequences of his actions.

Reporting this crime encourages others to lock their belongings up and/or not leave valuables in their cars etc. Students need to be on guard regardless of the “safe” reputation of SLO.

Good job Mustang Daily for reporting this crime and not sweeping it under the carpet because the offender was one of our own.

  6. He’s a dumbass. Cased closed. He knew the consequences. He’s just trying to be the badass of SLO. He’s a fat shit, so the cops took him down.

    Sad af.

  7. Mustang Daily and CPTV have a responsibility to report on the news that affect Cal Poly Students. This is one of them. Race has nothing to do with this.

    Great job MD

  8. yes they can report, but is it necessary to include his picture? look at ALL the other articles that deal with students getting arrested etc, do any of them have mug shots? they’re all white, this guy is a minority. it’s so funny how he’s exposed but everyone elses picture is kept from the public. RACIST MUCH?!
