Cal Poly Track and Field Break Even More Records In Final Meet Before Big West Championships

Across an impressive regular season that has finally come to a close, Cal Poly Track and Field has broken record after record, and at their final two meets, the trend continued.

The Mustangs split the team to attend the Fresno State and Payton Jordan Invitationals and didn’t disappoint at either meet, putting up impressive performances across the board.

Fresno State Invite

Cal Poly won seven events overall at the Fresno State Invite and was highlighted by multiple broken school records.

According to the April 23 edition of the USTFCCCA # EventSquad rankings, the Mustang throwing team continued its dominance, ranked nationally at No. 20 in the men’s hammer throw, No. 5 in the men’s javelin, and No. 89 in the men’s discus.

Junior Travis Martin shattered the school record set by teammate sophomore Rory Devaney in the men’s hammer throw again with a personal best throw of 222 feet, 3 inches to earn first in the event. Martin’s throw was good for No. 24 in Division I this year.

This marks the sixth time the record has been broken this season and the fifth time that Martin alone has broken it. Despite losing the record in the hammer to Martin, Devaney set a new program record in the men’s discus.

With a PR toss of 189 feet, 1 inch, Devaney broke the former record in the event by almost five feet. His throw ranks No. 36 in Division I.

Among other events, sophomore MacGregor TeSelle has made waves recently earning the most recent Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week.

The Roseville native is fresh off helping the Mustangs secure a new Division I program record in the men’s 4×400 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 19.

TeSelle earned first in the event and ran the ninth-fastest men’s 400 times in program history with a time of 47.03.

Junior Melody Nwagwu earned first place in the women’s long jump with a season-best leap of 19-2.75.

Sophomore Lexi Evans moved to No. 2 in school history in the women’s pole vault with a collegiate-best leap of 13 feet, 9.75 inches. Her mark currently ranks No. 34 nationally.

Payton Jordan Invitational

Four Mustang distance runners traveled to Stanford for the Payton Jordan Invitational, highlighted by sophomore Tatiana Cornejo

Two weeks after running the fourth fastest time in the women’s 5,000 in Cal Poly history, Cornejo ran a lifetime best of 4:20.70 in section two of the women’s 1,500, placing her at 10th in program history.

As the regular season closes, Cal Poly now looks forward to the Big West Track & Field Championships.

The first weekend, Cal Poly will have the multi-event portion of the meet on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4 at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.

The rest of the meet will take place the following week May 10-11, and a few Mustang distance runners will attend the Oxy Invitational on May 4, at Occidental College the weekend before.
