On Aug. 30, Cal Poly Women’s Soccer dropped a match 2-0 to Arizona State to kick off a string of four road games.
ASU attacked the Mustangs (2-2-1, 0-0 Big West) immediately, scoring in the third minute to claim the early lead.
For the remainder of the first half, Cal Poly held the Sun Devils (4-0-1, 0-0 Big 12) to one goal and pressed to even the score, but they couldn’t match ASU’s offensive output. The Mustangs were outshot 6-1 on shots on goal and unable to capitalize on any of their attacks.
The one shot on goal is tied for a season low for the Mustangs, tying their figure against Stanford.
In the second half, ASU scored again in the 82nd minute to make it 2-0. The match ended only five minutes later due to severe weather.
Despite a rough offensive show, there were some positive takeaways from the match.
First, the Cal Poly defense has continued to show they can keep games competitive with talented teams. ASU had a total of 14 shots taken, and the Mustangs held them to only 2 goals.
Goalkeeper Shannon Porubski was the star of the Mustang defense with a season-high four saves.
Additionally, forward Annika Smith returned to play today after an early exit from Cal Poly’s previous game against San Diego due to a hamstring injury. Smith was part of the starting lineup and played only 10 minutes as she eases her way back into action.
Next, Cal Poly continues its stretch of away games, facing Cal on Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley.
