In the final round at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, freshman Frederick Egnatios finished fifth at nine-under over 54 holes.
Egnatios entered the final round on Wednesday with a one-shot lead, but that lead quickly diminished after the first nine holes.
After a birdie on the first, Egnatios bogeyed five out of the next eight holes to shoot a four-over 40 on the front nine. But as the freshman from Scottsdale has done time and time again this season, he quickly bounced back with an eagle on the 10th.
After an equalizing birdie and a bogey on 11 and 12, Egnatios stayed even until a final birdie on 18 put him back on top of the leaderboard at one-over. With multiple golfers still on the course, Egnatios eventually moved down to fifth place, just one stroke behind the four-way tie for first.
Egnatios, now ranked No. 72, fell just short of top collegiate golfers, including No. 15 Emil Nielsen and No. 46 Sihao Cong, but still outpaced several others. In just three collegiate tournaments, Egnatios has already won and posted a top-five finish.
Freshman Vidur Subramaniam finished tied for 21st, including a clutch eagle on the 18th hole to reach one-under for the day and two-under overall. The eagle not only helped Subramaniam move up a few spots, but it also helped the team.
The two-stroke swing on the final hole moved Cal Poly to eighth place, finishing just two shots higher than Seattle and No. 30 Arkansas State.
Sophomore Rafael Bobo-Lloret tied for 65th at six-over, senior Jack Jarvis tied for 71st at +7, and freshman Leo McDonough finished tied for 80th at nine-over.
The Mustangs will resume action next Monday, Oct. 26, as they compete in Cal Poly’s own hosted tournament, The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate.
