Neil Fendall has been named as the new defensive backs coach for the Cal Poly football team.

Following former assistant coach Randy Hanson’s alleged involvement in an altercation a week ago, he’s announced his resignation from the Cal Poly football coaching staff, effective Friday.

In turn, Neil Fendall, who played safety under head coach Tim Walsh at Portland State, has been hired as his replacement and will coach the Mustangs defensive backfield this upcoming season.

For the past six seasons, Fendall was an assistant coach at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.  The Wildcats have had their fair share of recent success, as they went 10-1 a year ago for their 56th consecutive winning season.

As a player, Fendall lettered four times in football at Portland State. He also earned most valuable player honors as a safety, served as the Vikings’ team captain and played on three NCAA playoff teams.
