Michael Cera and Ellen Page sang her song in the final scene of the indie sensation “Juno,” now San Luis Obispo can sing along with Kimya Dawson as she performs that song at Mitchell Park today.
“Anyone Else but You,” which was made popular by the outcast teenagers’ cover, is one of six songs featured on the movie’s chart-topping soundtrack. It is expected that song will be performed by Dawson during “Potluck at the Park,” which kicks off at 1 p.m.
Dawson, who became well known as the female counterpart to Adam Green in the band The Moldy Peaches, will perform from a more natural set than usual. She will take center gazebo, neglecting a stage and avoiding a big production, D.I.Y. SLO member Willie Geussin said.
A low-key, yet anticipated, show in the park with some food on the side is not an unusual setting for D.I.Y. SLO. Hitting San Luis Obispo as she does a sweep down the West Coast, Dawson is accustomed to performing in unorthodox environments. She performed at a house in Santa Cruz earlier this week.
Dawson currently lives in Olympia, Wash. with her husband and her two-year-old daughter. Taking full advantage of the California sunshine before she returns home, Dawson turned down a show at the Art Center for the outside location. Which is how the event got its daytime spot. Putting on an outside show at night would be a really difficult proposition, Geussin explained.
There is no assurance a big crowd will meet for the potluck show because of its timing, but Geussin says people will find their way because “Kimya Dawson is kind of a big draw.”
Other musicians that will perform at the event include Neato-Bandito, Chris Klippel, Woman is a Dangercat and Cecropia.
Apart from the music selection, there will be food as observers and fans are encouraged to bring vegan foods to share for the potluck.
D.I.Y. SLO is a local homegrown organization that puts on shows for little to no cost at all. In order to put on such inexpensive shows the group has to be creative in their locations. They have set up shop anywhere from the San Luis Obispo Art Center to vacant rooms at Cal Poly to the top of a mountain at Cuesta Ridge.
The organization is also putting on Buchella ’09 at the San Luis Obispo Art Center at 7 p.m. Sunday. California bands Dirt Dress, Grand Lack, Pangea, Seasick, James Rabbit and Hatchlings will take center stage at the venue.
