With a career-best final-round score, sophomore Maddy Saysanasongkham climbed the leaderboard to secure third place at the Golf Iconic Classic, hosted by New Mexico State.
Saysanasongkham entered the final round on Wednesday at even par, with a 71 in the opening round and a 73 in the second. With a lot of ground to make up, the San Diego native rattled off five birdies and one bogey through the first eight holes before shooting a four-under 68 on the last day.
Her 212 (four-under) total was enough to earn third place individually and help Cal Poly Women’s Golf finish 12th overall.
The third-place finish marks Saysanasongkham’s best collegiate finish to date, and her final-round 68 is also an 18-hole career best. Saysanasongkham is off to a hot start this season, with one top-10 and one top-five through the first three tournaments and an impressive 54-hole total of 212.
Cal Poly’s second-highest finisher was freshman Ashley Gettleman, who tied for 34th place in only her third collegiate tournament. The freshman had a strong start, shooting 70 and 71 on the first two days, and finished at a six-over 222 through 54 holes.
Freshman Lexi Lowe was next, shooting a nine-over 225 with an eagle on the second day. Lowe opened with a four-over 76, followed by an even-par 72 and a five-over 77 to tie for 49th.
To round out the starting five for the Mustangs, senior Triana Fernando tied for 75th, and sophomore Taylor Baker placed 94th.
Women’s golf will be right back in the mix early next week as they head to Oklahoma to compete in the Route 66 Invitational hosted by Tulsa starting Monday, Oct. 19.
