The Cal Poly men’s golf team placed in the top 10 during the Spring-Opening Waves Challenge at Pepperdine Jan. 29-30.

Each of the individual members improved their standings over the course of the tournament to better the overall team ranking.

  • Senior Nick Engelhardt advanced five spots to tie for 25th with fellow senior Jimmy Castles moving up one spot to finish 29th.
  • Senior Grady Smith moved up seven spots to tie for 37th place and senior Mitch Martin leaped his way up nine spots to finish 40th.

The team tied for fourth place at the end of the first day, shooting 29 over par, but finished 10th place the second round with 36 over par.

In the end, the Mustangs swung themselves up one spot to ninth place with a 54-hole four-man 938 total, recording an aggregate score of 74 over-par for the challenge. Up against some tough competition, Cal Poly fell short just one stroke behind eighth place Fresno State.

The Mustangs travel to San Diego to compete in the PRO Compression Invitational at the Farms Golf Club Feb. 12-13.
