Local kitchen studio has grand opening

The Garden’s Kitchen Cooking Studio in San Luis Obispo will open its doors to the public in a grand opening doubling as a charity fundraiser Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Ashleigh Hutchison, the kitchen’s owner and operator, said she came up with the concept of the studio after having lived in, and been exposed to, the food culture of San Francisco and Hawaii.

Cal Poly announces volleyball schedule

Cal Poly announced Thursday its volleyball schedule for the upcoming season.

The 28-match slate will pit the two-time defending Big West Conference champion Mustangs against 11 other teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season.

They’ll host the cream of that crop – 2006 national champion Nebraska and 2007 runner-up Stanford – at Mott Gym on Sept.

Cal Poly ranked atop Big West

Cal Poly was ranked 80th of 279 schools in the 43rd annual United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup rankings released June 26 by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the United States Sports Academy and USA Today.

Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports – 10 men’s and 10 women’s.

Church aims to send Day family to Beijing

Sharon Day is preparing to fulfill a lifelong dream of competing in the women’s high jump at the Olympics.

Meanwhile, a non-profit organization in her hometown is trying to ensure the former Cal Poly standout doesn’t live her dream alone.

Palm Harvest Church of Costa Mesa has been collecting tax-deductible donations in order to provide Day’s family with the means to travel to Beijing and see her compete.

Mustangs to feel effects of Fresno State's run

While about a month has passed since the Fresno State baseball team won the College World Series championship, effects of the nationally celebrated run could just be beginning to be felt on the West Coast – including at Cal Poly.

Indeed, even Congressman Devin Nunes, a Fresno Republican who on July 15 announced the passage of a House resolution he introduced to honor the freshly crowned Bulldogs – is a Cal Poly graduate.
