The entrances to the “Poly P” trail have been temporarily relocated to accommodate the university’s ongoing housing construction projects.
To ensure safety and minimize disruption, hikers have been directed to two new entry points: one near the Cerro Vista loop exit and another behind the Sierra Madre volleyball courts. Clear signage is in place to guide hikers along the new routes.
“We request the campus community continue to observe all posted signage and remain clear of the project site,” university spokesperson Matt Lazier wrote in an email to Mustang News.
Construction for the student housing program began in the summer and is expected to impact the trailhead until construction reaches phase 3, expected to be completed in 2028. Cal Poly officials have emphasized their commitment to minimizing disruptions to the trail and the surrounding environment.
According to Lazier, the project team is also following the requirements of the SLO County Air Pollution Control District and Regional Water Quality Control Board.
“The team has engaged with a biologist, arborist, and archaeologist for initial observation and monitoring of the site,” Lazier wrote.
Changes to access and routes will be posted for the campus community on portal announcements, campus facility notifications and housing communications.
