Cal Poly Men’s Basketball takes the show on the road to Irvine to take on UC Irvine on Saturday, Jan. 18.
The Anteaters (16-2, 6-0 Big West) received votes in the last Associated Press Top 25 poll, a rarity for Big West squads.
The Mustangs (6-13, 0-7 Big West) fell in overtime the last time against UC Irvine and take a 45-game Big West regular-season losing streak into their matchup.
Turnovers continue to persist
The Mustangs committed 20 turnovers against UC Davis after committing 33 in their first matchup.
The team shot better from behind the arc but had trouble finishing at the rim. Of the team’s 17 made field goals, 11 came from three.
That resulted in long stretches of scoreless play from the Mustangs, which allowed UC Davis to pull away and hand Cal Poly their 45th straight Big West loss.
Previously against the Anteaters
In the team’s first game against UC Irvine, senior guard Isaac Jessup hit a three with less than thirty seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Cal Poly was with the Anteaters every step of regulation despite foul trouble from both graduate guards Mac Riniker and Owen Koonce.
The team ran out of gas in overtime and shot just 2-for-11, ultimately falling 97-90.
Keeping both out of foul trouble and the turnovers down will be key as the Mustangs look for an upset.
Cal Poly faces UC Irvine on Saturday, Jan.18, inside the Bren Events Center at 7 p.m.
