For the second time in as many games, the Cal Poly men’s soccer team went to double overtime. Unlike Wednesday night, though, when the Mustangs were able to score in the 103rd minute to edge Cal State Bakersfield for a 3-2 win, they couldn’t overcome a stalwart defensive stand Sunday afternoon at Sacramento State, leaving Hornet Soccer Field with a 1-1 tie.
Hornets midfielder Josh Zimbrich left the contest in the 80th minute after receiving his second yellow card for cleating Evan Richter. A man down for the final 30 minutes, Sacramento State hung back and put all its effort into staving off Cal Poly’s advances.
Cal Poly’s David Zamora opened the scoring in the 18th minute (on assists from Jose Garcia and Wes Feighner) with his fourth goal of the season.
The Hornets (5-2-2) answered in the 49th minute with a penalty kick by Fernando Cabadas. It was their only shot on goal of regulation.
The Mustangs (5-2-2), who outshot the Hornets 20-5, open Big West Conference play by hosting Cal State Fullerton in Alex G. Spanos Stadium at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Blalock eliminated in singles play
Cal Poly women’s tennis junior Brittany Blalock was eliminated Sunday from singles play at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women’s All-American Championships in Malibu.
Blalock fell to Mississippi freshman Kristi Boxx 6-1, 6-3 in the third round of pre-qualifying competition, but she and teammate Steffi Wong (also a junior) will partake Tuesday in the tournament’s doubles play in Pacific Palisades.
As a doubles tandem, Blalock and Wong are ranked 31st by the ITA.
