A San Luis Obispo police officer shot and killed a man who was holding a replica firearm Saturday evening.

At around 4:46 p.m., the San Luis Obispo Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a man “shouting aggressively and waving a firearm” on El Capitan Way, a street in south San Luis Obispo near Vons grocery store, according to a press release from the City of San Luis Obispo.

Officers located the man near the intersection of Poinsettia Street and Blue Bell Way who was “actively yelling and holding what appeared to be a hand gun.”

An officer confronting the “threat” discharged their weapon striking the man once, according to the release. The man was declared dead at the scene despite efforts to save his life. No officers or other community members were injured.

Investigation after the incident revealed that the firearm was actually a replica.

According to the release, investigations with “simulated firearms” are conducted by the California Department of Justice. The department will “cooperate fully with the investigation” and body-cam footage will be released in accordance with a state law passed in 2018.

“Any loss of life is tragic. The San Luis Obispo Police Department acknowledges and is saddened by the impact of this incident on those involved, their families, our employees, and our community,” the release said.

The officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

The man’s identity will be released once next of kin is identified.

This investigation is ongoing and more information will be provided once it becomes available, according to the release.
