arrest

Two San Luis Obispo college students including a Cal Poly student were arrested Monday morning on suspicion of possessing $15,000 to $18,000 worth of ecstasy pills and prescription medication.

Vigneshwaran Ramar, 20, was arrested when San Luis Obispo narcotic detectives obtained a warrant and searched his apartment and vehicle, finding 923 ecstasy pills. During the search, Ramar’s roommate, Cal Poly software engineering junior Wilson Lau was found to be in possession of prescription medication not prescribed to him.

Ramar was believed to be responsible for obtaining ecstasy pills, bringing them into the county and selling them to other individuals.

Ramar was arrested for allegedly possessing a controlled substance for sale and Lau was arrested for allegedly possessing of a controlled substance.

Both Ramar and Lau were booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail. Ramar’s bail is set at $50,000 while Lau’s is $20,000.

  1. This is what I do not like about journalists. You’ve got this picture and story of one of our students on the home page WITHOUT A CONVICTION, but you’ve already associated him with wrongdoing. Tell me why an ALLEGATION can make prominent headlines? What newsworthy substance does an allegation contain? Why would you possibly humiliate one of our students before the case has seen it’s day in court with either the confirming or dismissal of the allegation? This is like passing off rumors to the public in the disguise of “news”. What I would like is if you would be patient enough to find if the student was convicted or not before assassinating his character.

    1. EDITOR’S NOTE: The photos and all information regarding the arrest were released to the media and public by the San Luis Obispo Police Department. As with all arrests, this is public information readily available to any member of the public who wishes to access it.

We report on the news. In this case, the news was that a Cal Poly student had been arrested on suspicion of drug possession. We make no allegations; we simply report on the fact that an arrest occurred, and we do so because we believe it is our role to inform our readers of the truth.

    1. EDITOR’S NOTE: Please refer to my reply on Tom’s comment. The photos were released to the Mustang Daily and other local media by SLOPD.

  2. I know this is public information and the police did release it, but so what? The police release dozens of articles weekly. I would like to know what line of logic you took in thinking that though we don’t know if this allegation is true, THIS story MUST go out to the student body. You say you reported the news? If you were really honest about this story the headline would read: “We Really Don’t Have any Information on the Story behind the Incident or who is Guilty but here are the Pictures of Two, So Far, Innocent Males”. A journalist should have excellent filtering skills that separate truth and facts from claims and charges but you haven’t shown that desirable trait. A journalist that can differentiate these qualities knows that ALLEGATIONS SHOULD NOT MAKE THE PAPER, PERIOD.

    1. don’t get so butt hurt Tom, you are probably one of these two drug peddlers buddies who is upset that they can’t get their fix this weekend. obviously getting caught with 18k worth of drugs isn’t just an allegation. you do not just accidentally get investigated for this kind of quantity. Now had the mustang daily reported on kids on campus using drugs or something to that extent that would definitely be unwarranted. please stop defending your friends from the stupid decisions that they made themselves.

      get real.

  3. I’m with Tom. Reading this article’s exploitation of those two guys makes me sick to my stomach. Real classy.

  4. Based on Tom and Selina’s thinking, the press shouldn’t report anything until a conviction is obtained or wrong doing is proved beyond a doubt.

If that approach were used, George Bush would never have been investigated for untoward activities surrounding WMDs in Iraq, NY’s gov Elliott Spitzer would not have resigned for activities with a hooker, Illinois’ gov should still be in office despite efforts to sell Obama’s senate seat and Bill Clinton would never have been impeached for sex with a 22 year old intern.

    Get real!!

  5. All due respect to Tom & Skyline, a drug arrest on campus is simply, indisputably newsworthy. Please note the careful wording, which makes it clear that this was an arrest, not a conviction. Kudos to the Daily for reporting quickly, accurately and responsibly.

    1. Kim, there is no indication that this happened on campus. Please reconsider your statements and be more careful about your wording.

  6. Now, the 18k worth of drugs may have been legitimate news, but I’m not sure that arresting someone for possessing someone else’s prescription is. It could’ve been his hypothetical sister’s prescription strength acne medication, for all we know, but he’s being as badly persecuted (by the Mustang Daily posting his mug) as the guy with all the ecstasy pills.
