Cal Poly students voted Tanner Schinderle to serve as the ASI President for the 2026-27 academic year. Schinderle, a political science junior and the current ASI chief of staff, ran on a platform centered on affordability, resources, community and action.

Voting concluded Thursday morning, with Schinderle receiving 4,103 votes prevailing over Caleb Shick, a business administration junior who received 269 votes. Schinderle’s term officially begins on the last day of the spring quarter.

Throughout the campaign, Schinderle emphasized what he calls his “institutional knowledge” gained from serving two years in the ASI Executive Cabinet, first as secretary and most recently as chief of staff. Schinderle frequently cited his leadership in launching the ASI Grocery Shuttle program, which provided over 4,400 rides in Winter Quarter alone, as proof of his ability to deliver tangible results to students.

“I have a track record in this program that has proven to have an impact on student lives,” Schinderle stated during the presidential debate.

Schinderle’s term is expected to focus on several key initiatives to lower the cost of student life and expand campus resources. Here’s how Schinderle plans to enact change under each of his four pillars:

Affordability

Expanding the rental registry and implementing a property rental rating system to provide transparency for students living off-campus. Schinderle is already collaborating with Weston Patrick, ASI Secretary of Communications, who co-authored the Board of Directors resolution supporting a rental registry, which passed in March.

Resources

Increasing 24/7 study spaces on campus beyond the two floors in the library, and launching new shuttle programs for weekend beach trips and airport transportation during academic breaks.

Community

Supporting the more than 300 clubs and student organizations through the transition from the quarter to the semester system.

Action

Ensuring that student voices are “at the center of every decision” made by the university by bringing club and athletic leaders directly into conversations with administration.

Shinderle will step into the role during a historic time for Cal Poly. Starting July 1, he will be the first ASI President to represent students at both the San Luis Obispo campus and the newly integrated Solano campus. According to ASI, there is no current roadmap for this integration, so Schinderle will be required to travel significantly between campuses to understand the unique needs and culture of the Solano student body.

Additionally, the upcoming semester conversion will require him to put in more work this summer than the ASI presidents before him.
