University President Jeffrey Armstrong confirmed in a memo to campus today that after discussions with California State University (CSU) Chancellor Timothy White and presidents from other CSU campuses, Cal Poly will begin the process of converting to semesters by the end of the decade.

“Following discussion, there was a clear understanding by Chancellor White and all presidents, that the benefits of a common calendar outweigh individual campus preferences,” Armstrong wrote in the memo.

Armstrong confirmed that though he recommended to White that Cal Poly remain on the quarter system, it was decided that the CSU system as a whole would begin the process of converting to semesters.

It is expected that Cal Poly will begin the conversion process after all other quarter-based campuses are converted. This delayed conversion, Armstrong wrote, is related to the strong opposition to semester conversion within the Cal Poly community.

“In consideration of the different perspectives on this matter — including the Cal Poly Semester Review Task Force report and the supporting votes by the Academic Senate, (Associated Students, Inc.) ASI Board of Directors, and the students’ campuswide referendum — Cal Poly would not convert to semesters until the other campuses have gone forward,” Armstrong wrote.

Armstrong wrote that the phased approach to semester conversion is also in effort to minimize costs at every converting campus.

“At the CSU systemwide level, this phased approach will enable the CSU to defray 75 percent of each campus’s expected reasonable costs associated with converting to semesters,” Armstrong wrote.

  1. “Following discussion, there was a clear understanding by Chancellor White and all presidents, that the benefits of a common calendar outweigh individual campus preferences”

So basically, lets ignore the ONLY SCHOOL THAT VOTED ON IT and go with what we want. They basically just picked what they wanted, and fuck the students and faculty

  2. Wow, armstrong is terrible. Whatever happened to that so called “student success fee”. I am so glad I am graduating from Poly soon. What a joke

    1. They ought to rename the “student success fee” the “You’re Getting Fucked Over Fee” while they are at it.

  3. Is there a slight problem with the comment “following discussion, there was a clear understanding all presidents,0 the the benefits…outweigh individual campus preferences” and the statement “Armstrong confirmed that though he recommended to White that Cal Poly remain on the quarter system”?

Anyone else think maybe his “recommendation” was for public ears only, that in fact he had no problem with recommending all campuses switch.

    Draw your own conclusions.

  4. Its great to hear Armstrong is fighting for us… I mean sure, I can understand why bureaucratic officials would want to simplify their lives and have the entire csu on one calendar… But it’s a real shame to hear Armstrong is going along with them despite the clear position of the entire Cal Poly community. Come on Armstrong, do your job and represent the students.

    1. Cal Poly could succeed and go private; UC system is the epitome of California’s Cultural Marxism (Political Correctness) ideals.

  5. What a pathetic excuse for a school president Armstrong is. He’s acting more like a dictator than a head figure who is supposed to stand up for this school! I dont know why he asked for our opinion and even assembled a task force if he OBVIOUSLY doesn’t give a shit. I wish he had more cahonas to stand up to the Chancellor and say that our INDIVIDUALITY as a school is more important than being like every other campus! He disgusts me. When can we kick him out?

  6. President Armstrong is a little bitch! Why is he making 100s of thousands of dollars if he isn’t willing to stand up for his students’- his constituents’ interests. A large plurality of students VOTED NO for semesters and I am aware that an overwhelming majority of professors prefer quarters also. Why is it then that this pathetic excuse of a president who I don’t see do much of anything and who is making 100s of thousands of which he doesn’t deserve couldn’t go to the Chancellor, and with some balls, tell him that Cal Poly doesn’t and won’t change to semesters, that CP is excelling with the Quarter system and therefore changing is irrelevant. I came to Cal Poly because it is the best CSU but conforming to the semester system makes us just another CSU. I won’t be affected by this change if it occurs by the end of the decade, but I am not going on this rant because of how I personally feel, I’m posting this to express the views of the students and faculty who dare not to. We as students are paying thousands of dollars to attend CP every year so OUR VOICE SHOULD MATTER. I would like to conclude with a reference to John Locke,Mr Locke said something along the lines that when a “government” ceases to function for its people, that the people have a right to dissolve it and form a new government. President Armstrong is that “government.” -Publius

  7. Since the president of CP obviously doesn’t have a pair, can someone who works with the animals find a set for him?

  9. President Armstrong never did have the balls to stand up to anything. He just wants to ride out toward retirement and what is not best for the Cal Poly Alumni and student body. This is another sad day in history for Cal Poly. There is no longer Poly Royal, so what is next to make Cal Poly not apart from all the CSU. Cal Poly is an elite institution of education and it standout among all the other CSU and as well in the country. It will just be another CSU campus.
By converting to the semester system, student will have to ride out twice as long to finish their classes to graduate. The cost of increase tuitions, pay longer rent, food and etc.

  10. After all that’s gone on, I didn’t see this conversion happening! I’ve been to the semester conversion info sessions and read the whole report on the conversion from the “task force.” When attending the semester conversion info session, I asked several questions including “where are we getting the money to pay for this.” After a long and drawn out answer from Fernflores, I clarified her answer by saying “So, in a nutshell, we have no idea where the money will come from,” and she said “correct.” I’ll tell you where the money is going to come from: FUTURE STUDENTS AND TAXPAYERS. What a waste of money. To President Armstrong: The quarter system isn’t broken! Fight for us! Don’t throw in the towel.

By the way, the cost to convert is approx 21 MILLION according to the report. In 5-7 years, that will be 30 million.

As a student, I’ve met President Armstrong three times in different settings. He was a very personable guy and seemed to have the best interest of the students at heart. Unfortunately, this has changed my opinion of him. He is alienating the students because of this type of behavior.

For a soon to be engineering alumni, I can tell you I won’t be giving back to my Alma Mater in the form of money. Why would I? Funds are squandered on issues like this.

Well, enough of my rant. Don’t get me started on the “Student Success Fee”…

    1. Good point. I too, will no longer donate money to Cal Poly anymore and will ignore all those nightly calls. My money can go to other worthy causes.

      1. My annual giving will end the day Poly goes to semesters.

Can’t these expletive, expletive, expletive CSU suits (‘promoted to reflect their incompetence’) figure Cal Poly – SLO is the CSU’s crown jewel and have all the other campuses benchmark us and switch to quarters.

President Jeffery Armstrong you’re incompetent; you’re Fired!!!
