Students looking to add a little holiday spirit to the end of their quarter will find plenty of good tidings and cheer at Cal Poly Take it SLO’s annual holiday a cappella concert this Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Davidson Music room 218.
Take it SLO has been an a cappella group at Cal Poly for 10 years, and is a “fun way to challenge ourselves in organizing music,” business administration senior Shannon Conmy said.
“It’s an interesting thing to have in college,” she said.
Conmy said the holiday show is always a big hit with the community and students.
“Everyone’s in the holiday spirit,” said Conmy, who has been singing with the group for three years.
Conmy said the group is bringing back many old holiday tunes for this year’s concert, many of which are more challenging than other songs they usually perform.
“Musicians in the audience will appreciate them,” Conmy said.
The first half of the show will feature current hits and will feel more like Take it SLO’s other shows, Conmy said. Then, during the second half, the 12-member group will perform holiday-themed songs wearing “standard ugly Christmas sweaters and fun holiday stuff,” Conmy said.
“It’s going to be a really homey feel with the holiday music,” Conmy said.
While holiday songs such as “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” and “Carol of the Bells” are classic favorites, Conmy said the a cappella group takes the songs and plays with the lyrics to morph them into scenarios that college students can relate to.
“It’s so much more fun,” Conmy said.
Conmy said in previous years, the holiday show normally sells out, and advised students to arrive 30 minutes early to ensure a seat. Conmy estimated that at least 200 people come to the shows each year.
“I hope people get something out of it (the show),” Conmy said. “I enjoy seeing people enjoy our music. We’re a fun group of individuals and we enjoy performing.”
Tickets will be sold at the door, $5 for students and $7 for the public.

We used to get 2,000 students and others to our Men’s Glee Club’s Christmas Concert and spring Home Concert in the Men’s Gym in the early 60’s. What has happened to our students that they don’t come out for Cal Poly’s musical presentations? They also aren’t having Big Band dances like we did with the Cal Poly Collegians and other famous dance bands either, up until the early 70’s. What has happened to the fun loving Mustangs? It should read,”Good Luck to our December grads”. I also am happy that Reese Morgan is finally stepping up to make points and commentary is being made for our Men’s Basketball team, even though we lost the game to Saint Mary’s. The season is just beginning and time for him and the team to get many more points and wins. Go to it Mustangs!!
