The Mustangs traveled to UC San Diego for the Triton Invitational and continued to put up outstanding performances.

Junior Travis Martin shined once again, breaking his own school record for the third time, winning the men’s hammer throw with a personal best of 217 feet, eight inches.

Martin transferred from De Anza Junior College where he won the California Community College Athletic Association California State Championship in the men’s hammer throw in the 2022-23 season.

The San Jose native made an instant impact during the UCSB Invite, which ran from March 6-8. In his first event as a Mustang, he broke the school record in the men’s hammer throw by over 12 feet with a throw of 214 feet, six inches.

It’s not just Martin, though. Cal Poly’s throwing teams have been impressive as a whole.

According to the week two USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings released on April 1, the Mustangs currently have the No. 9 men’s javelin squad in the nation and the No.18 men’s hammer throw squad.

Martin, along with athletes such as junior Colby Neron, who also transferred from a junior college, earned No. 3 on Cal Poly’s all-time list in the men’s javelin earlier this season. The two throwers have been making the Mustang throwers a true threat going forward.

Though not ranked, the shot put team has been performing as well. Junior Corban Payne took sixth in the elite men’s shot put with a mark of 55-7.75. Payne has also been having a great season and previously won the event during the UCSB Invite in March.

As the only runner who traveled to the meet, junior  Melody Nwagwu also impressed, taking first in the women’s triple jump and posting a season-best mark of 40-0.5. Nwagwu sits at seventh on Cal Poly’s all time ranking in the event.

As the Big West championships inch closer and closer, the Mustangs are trending upwards.

Next, Cal Poly track and field will compete in multiple meets at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 11-13 and the Beach Invitational on April 12-13.
