The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported Wednesday that a 20-year-old pedestrian is in critical condition after being hit by a car on Foothill Boulevard.

The woman, Kaitlin Mackay, is listed in the Cal Poly student directory as a nutrition student and is listed on Facebook in the graduating class of 2011.

Cal Poly art & design junior Cathy Kossack was at the scene when police officials were beginning what appeared to be an investigation of the event. The stoplight was broken and a police officer was directing traffic between Tassajara Drive and Patricia Street, Kossack said.

She said the accident took place around 8:30 p.m. at the corner of Tassajara Drive and Foothill Boulevard, about a mile from campus.

The Tribune reports:

Mackay was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in critical condition. The incident remained under investigation Wednesday night and police refused to release additional information.

They report Mackay was hit by 47-year-old May Lin Dong of Los Osos.

  1. The accident occured at 7:00pm. The driver of the vehicle had trouble seeing due to the direct sunlight at the time and the driver supposedly ran the red light and struck Kaitlin as she was crossing within the crosswalk. The stoplight was in working order at the time of the accident. The police and city officials are able to manually turn off the lights for precautionary measures, hence the flashing red lights in both directions.
