Industrial engineering junior Matthew Hurlbutt was killed on the first southbound lane of Highway 101 early Sunday morning.

The California Highway Patrol said Hurlbutt, 21, was struck by a Toyota Tacoma near the Santa Rosa Street exit. The driver, a Pismo Beach resident, was traveling at about 65 mph. Hurlbutt was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a press release from the highway patrol, Hurlbutt walked into the traffic lanes and the driver could not avoid the collision. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved.

The incident remains under investigation; the coroner’s report will be released after 8 a.m. Monday, according to a representative from the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office.

  3. first off, i didnt know this was a billboard, i thought i was messaging the newspaper directly. i did not want to discuss this publicly.

    Second, i DID NOT see it happen. I had the misfortune of driving by the scene before the authorities arrived. So i contacted them. That is all.

    i offer my sincerest condolences to Matt’s family and friends. I did not know Matt, but I am sure he was loved by many and will be missed sorely.
